After a trip into Napoleonic times, which the authors of Battleground donated to the players in the previous installment of the series, in the fourth part of the game we return to the reality of the American Civil War. This time TalonSoft took part in the workshop another famous battle of that period, which was the battle of Shiloh.
The Battle of Shiloh took place on 6 and 7 April 1862. The Confederates' army, headed by General Albert Johnston, and the EU army led by the legendary Ulysses S., stood against each other. Grant. Despite the surprise attack, the Confederate forces failed to break up the Tennessee Army, and Johnston himself was mortally wounded in this fight. Under General Beauregard's command, the attack continued without knowing that Grant troops had merged with the Ohio Army in the meantime, which, given its large numerical strength, eventually turned the balance of victory in favour of the EU.
Battleground 4: Shiloh gives us the opportunity to play a whole two-day battle, or a series of individual scenarios in which we can stand on both the side of the Union and the Confederates. In addition, we receive several hypothetical scenarios and - as a bonus - 2 missions taking place in the western theatre of activities: Wilson's Creek and Prairie Grove. The mechanics of the game has not changed in comparison with Gettysburg, and the game still surprises with its high realism and reconstructed with exceptional meticulousness battlefields. The faithful reproduction of the uniforms from that period was not forgotten either. Traditionally, apart from playing alone, the series offers the possibility of two-person competition through a modem or in PBEM mode.
The game frame, apart from a few minor changes, remained at the same level. We continue to take advantage of the Battleview engine, thanks to which the battlefield can be observed in classic view or isometric projection. Traditionally, we can also see a number of film inserts illustrating the course of the battle and the historical reality. In the soundtrack of the game - just like in Battleground: Gettysburg - we can listen again to authentic songs from the war time, prepared by Bobby Horton.
