Battle Fleet 2: WW2 in the Pacific, released on PC, AND and iOS, is a continuation of the turn-based marine strategy that was released in May 2012 exclusively on Apple computers and mobile devices. The game was created by Capital j Media, the authors of the original. The team has worked on a mobile version of Line of Defense Tactics, a strategy game by Studio 3000 AD.
Mechanics
As in the case of the original, the action of Battle Fleet 2: WW2 in the Pacific takes us back to World War II in the Pacific, where the forces of the United States and Japan fought against each other. At the beginning of the game, we create our fleet of warships, divided into 6 classes distinguished by different firepower and mobility. Then, we equip the units with the appropriate type of weaponry, using a wide arsenal of cannons, torpedoes and various types of artillery, as well as appoint captains by choosing them from among officers equipped with different special abilities, which can often help in achieving the success.
We send a team created in this way to battle, during which our main target are ships, land bases and artillery, as well as planes sent from airports, cruisers or enemy aircraft carriers. The competition takes place in a turn-based system and its mechanics use solutions known from such games as Scorched Earth or Worms. Each salvo directed towards the enemy requires us to determine the angle and strength of the shot. It is also possible to use the terrain as a natural cover. Thanks to the "fog of war" option and the participation of different types of units, each of the battles require the right tactical approach. Individual skills of captains are also an additional variety - thanks to special action cards, they can, for example, improve the mobility or accuracy of the ship or surprise the opponent with a unique type of attack.
Game modes
In addition to the classic campaign mode, in which we lead the U.S. Army, Battle Fleet 2 also offers a skirmish mode and a functional multiplayer mode, where we can compete with live players in the "hot seat" variant or via the Internet. It is also worth noting that the game offers a cross-platform option, allowing PC and mobile devices users to play with each other.
Technical aspects
Compared to the original, the graphics in Battle Fleet 2: WW2 in the Pacific created on the Unity engine is done in full 3D - however, the whole action is shown in the top view and we don't have the ability to change the angle of the camera. The authors, however, took care of the proper realism of their production, replicating authentic models of Japanese and American ships taking part in the war in the Pacific.
