Barotrauma Description
Barotrauma is a simulation game in which we take control of a submarine crew. The game was developed by independent Finnish studios FakeFish and Undertow Games and released by Daedalic Entertainment.
Plot
The action of Barotrauma takes place in the near future. After escaping from the Earth, a group of adventurers found refuge on Europa - the ice-bound moon of Jupiter, where life is only possible in the depths of the ocean. The protagonists will face a real struggle for survival, especially as people are not the only beings living on this mysterious globe.
Mechanics
In Barotrauma, the action is shown from the side. In the course of the game, we travel through procedurally generated locations, carrying out various tasks, confronting opponents (or running away from them in panic), as well as discovering various secrets of the moon. Under a thick layer of ice we can come across not only small earthly colonies, but also ancient ruins, wrecks of other submarines or unknown species of creatures.
Although our proteges may dive into the depths (for example to plunder the remains of foreign civilization), they spend most of their time on board the ship. Controlling the boat requires the player to fill five positions (captain, engineer, mechanic, physician and assistant), as well as to manage various systems (such as nuclear reactor or even sonar) and to react quickly to random events (including breakdowns). Apart from that, there is a place for extensive crafting in the game - based on acquired resources and artifacts, the crew can create useful tools, weapons and medicines.
Game modes
Barotrauma offers both single and multiplayer gameplay in the company of up to fifteen players. A story campaign, individual scenarios, a sandbox module and a co-op mode (via the Internet or on a shared screen), where nothing stands in the way of betraying our team in pursuit of personal goals, are waiting to be tested. In addition, the authors provided a powerful editor integrated with the Steam Workshop, which enables us to create new enemies, ships or entire levels and share them with the community.
Technical aspects
Barotrauma features detailed, two-dimensional graphics maintained in subdued colors and dark style. Ubiquitous darkness, red ship deck lighting and atmospheric soundtrack create a gloomy, mysterious atmosphere.
