PS1

Backyard Soccer is a sports game. While Humongous Entertainment was responsible for developing the PC version, the development of the PlayStation edition 1 was undertaken by the team at Runecraft.

Mechanics

In Backyard Soccer the players take control of a group of kids from the neighborhood, dreaming of making a career in the world of football. The core of the game are the matches played on more or less professional pitches. During the game we observe the action in isometric projection, and the game is governed by the rules known from real stadiums - so there is no shortage of fouls, free kicks or penalties. Nevertheless, there are also power-ups that can be used by the players: Cannon enables us to execute a powerful shot; Underground lets the ball fly under the surface of the pitch and emerge in a random location; Bowling Ball turns the ball into a giant bowling ball that knocks out rivals; and the Tracer lets you take direct control of the ball.

Game modes

Backyard Soccer consists of two main gameplay variants. The first one is Season Play, where we create an eight-person team (selecting its members from among thirty players described by individual set of attributes) and help them climb the football career ladder up to the Astonishingly Shiny Cup of All Cups Tournament. The second mode is a single game, in which we can play a match, train penalty kicks or take part in mini tournaments.

Technical aspects

Backyard Soccer is characterized by eye-catching visuals adopting a cartoonish style inspired by fairy tales, which peaked at the end of the nineties of the twentieth century.
