Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is a Japanese fantasy RPG and a part of the vast Atelier series. It was developed by Gust, just like the previous installments. It is a remake of the first game in the series, originally released on PlayStation in 1997. As it was never officially released outside of Japan, the remake is the first opportunity for Western fans to experience this title.

Plot

The game is set in a magical fantasy world, in the titular city of Salsburg. The main protagonist is a 19-year-old alchemy school student named Marie. She's the worst student in her class, facing expulsion. Her teacher, however, gives her one last chance - Marie receives her own workshop and the task of creating something special withing five years. She must succeed to graduate.

Mechanics

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is a jRPG in which we explore the world, complete quests, upgrade our characters and face enemies in turn-based battles. Marie isn't alone on her quest, soon being joined by her friends.

Keeping to the series' traditions, the game heavily emphasizes crafting due to its alchemy system. There are many different ingredients and resources to choose from, letting us brew various potions and craft magic items. Crafting is made more varied thanks to the presence of numerous mini-games.

Many elements of the game have been improved since the original release. Tutorials have been expanded, the interface has been rebuilt, while the exploration and item gathering mechanics were improved to be more in line with modern standards.

Additional events and characters have also been introduced. Another big new feature is Unlimited Mode, an alternate gameplay mode which removes the time limits of the campaign, granting us more freedom.

The game only supports singleplayer.

Technical aspects

The visuals of Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg are three-dimensional, making use of an appealing colorful anime artstyle. The graphics were created from scratch, offering higher quality while maintaining the original game's distinctive style.
