Asura is a hack'n'slash enriched with roguelike elements, developed by the independent team of Ogre Head Studio.
Story
Asura takes players into a fantasy world inspired by Hindu beliefs. The protagonist was brought back to life as the title demon to take revenge on Hasiram, the God-King, at the head of the sinister Daeva empire. The hero sets off on a journey whose aim is to turn Pancha Dvora, the five great fortresses belonging to the empire, into dust.
Mechanics
Asura's gameplay is based on two pillars, i.e. exploration and combat. The permadeath mechanic has been implemented in the game, and the fortresses are generated procedurally so that each time we face different challenges. In addition, the game is complicated by such thinga as the fact that when set aflame hero loses some of his equipment, can't cure himself after poisoning and his health doesn't regenerate automatically.
On our way there are several dozen types of opponents, among which several powerful bosses lead the way. The battles take place in real-time and offer a wide range of melee and ranged weapons or various combat spells. Interestingly, when we manage to deal with an opponent, we can decide whether we want to search his body for equipment, or to absorb it to gain experience points.
The game does not lack extensive possibilities of character progression - it is worth adding, that similarly to locations, also the skill tree (appearing here under the name "Shastra") is generated procedurally, each time offering a slightly different set of unlockable skills. In addition, during the game we gain access to three variants of the demon, determining the possibilities that open up for him on the battlefield.
Technical aspects
Despite its simplicity, Asura's three-dimensional visuals can be enjoyed - all the deficiencies in the level of detail are masked by the original style reminiscent of Hindu paintings.
Other
Some time after the release of the game a free DLC, The Vengeance Expansion, was released. The biggest novelty it introduced is the new game mode - in the so-called Vengeance Mode we face waves of opponents, trying to score as many points as possible; the results can be boasted on the online scoreboards. In addition, there is a higher level of difficulty (Mahasura) - after its selection, the players must expect that the defeated opponents will return to life after some time, and fire will destroy weapons of the protagonist.
However, the so-called Chakra System comes in handy here, thanks to which the taking down a boss results in the acquisition of unique perks. The list of introduced novelties is closed with new artifacts, new levels, as well as the possibility to save our character in a special crypt (Shamsan) and to try out luck in a mini-game consisting in throws dice.
