A war-themed real-time strategy that is a remake of the original Men of War from 2009. Both titles were developed by Digitalmindsoft and Best Way. Similarly to its predecessor, Assault Squad 2: Men of War Origins is a war game taking place during WWII. Instead of classic base-building or gathering resources, the whole attention has been focused on tactical aspects and commanding units.

Assault Squad 2: Men of War Origins for PC is a war-themed RTS and a remake of the first Men of War, released in 2009. The project has been developed by Digitalmindsoft, a German studio, which, in cooperation with Ukrainian Best Way, also developed the original game.

Mechanics

When it comes to mechanics, Assault Squad 2: Men of War Origins doesn’t introduce anything new in relation to the predecessor. We receive a WWII-themed war game that concentrates on tactical aspects. There is no base-building or gathering resources. Instead, we are busy with commanding our units.

The gameplay is quite difficult, and introduces much more options than a typical RTS. The player can order his troops to crawl or to kneel down, take over enemy vehicles, and aim at their different elements, manage the soldiers’ equipment, or take direct control over an individual character, just like in an action game.

Game modes

Assault Squad 2: Men of War Origins for PC offers the full content of its predecessor. We receive a complex singleplayer mode, consisting of three campaigns – one for each faction: Soviet Union, Germany, and Allied forces. In all, 19 complex missions await completing, during which we fight not only on Europe’s battlefields, but also in North Africa.

Aside from the campaign, a multiplayer mode is available. In addition to three factions mentioned earlier, we can take control of other Allied forces.

Technical aspects

The game uses an up-to-date version of GEM engine, known from Men of War: Assault Squad 2. As a result, DirectX 11, including various modern effects, such as SSAO, is supported. The textures and models have also been upgraded. The ballistic system and other aspects of physics also received certain improvements.

The user interface received a huge overhaul, now including many useful options known from the newer installments, such as automatic refill of ammunition, or units gathering experience. The authors incorporated a better AI, and remastered the audio effects.
