Steam
A strategy simulation game about running the titular abbey. Our tasks in Ale Abbey include brewing ale and then selling it on the market, expanding the abbey, maintaining good relations with our neighbors, keeping our monks happy and dealing with pressing issues, like bandit attacks.
Ale Abbey is a production on the border of strategic and simulation games, in which we run the titular abbey. The game was developed by the independent Estonian studio Hammer & Ravens, which has projects such as the strategy game Empires in Ruins, as well as shooters Headbangers in Holiday Hell and Razerwire: Nanowars in its portfolio.
Gameplay
Brewing beer
In Ale Abbey we watch the events from the side. During the game we run an abbey that specializes in brewing beer. The game allows us to prepare alcohol representing over 20 European styles. To brew each beer type, we need not only the appropriate equipment and ingredients, but also the correct recipe. We must follow the recipe steps, taking care of things like the quantity, quality, and temperature of the mash.
This is not the end, because after brewing the beer, we can decide whether to let it lie in the cellar to gain more flavor, or to immediately put it up for sale at the market.
Expansion of the abbey and other duties
Preparing beer is not our only job. For effective operation, we need a real monastery, equipped not only with rooms related to brewing, but also with residential quarters, a library, as well as a refectory and the abbot's office. As we progress, we can gradually expand our headquarters, the size of which reflects how well we are doing in the beer market.
A special mention should be made to the needs of the monks brewing beer for us, which we must satisfy. The game also makes it possible to cooperate with neighboring abbeys. From time to time, we also have to deal with problems, which include bandit attacks and maintaining relations with the surrounding lords.
Graphics
The two-dimensional graphics of Ale Abbey were created using pixel art technique.
