Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms

Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms is a fantasy action RPG set in a dark world and offering an extensive story layer, demanding gameplay and a four-player co-op mode. The independent studio Gamera Interactive (the devs of Unit 4 and Midnight Caravan) is responsible for developing and publishing the title. The screenplay was co-written by the well-known developer Chris Avellone (Fallout: New Vegas, Planescape: Torment or Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords).

Plot

In the game world, several dozen different clans and noble houses compete for power and influence. The player takes on the role of a representative of one of them. Their decisions affect the main plot, changing the fate of the eponymous four kingdoms.

Mechanics

Gameplay combines certain aspects of classic, isometric RPGs - complex plot, companions with their own stories and characters - with a demanding combat in real-time (the devs boast of similarities to the Dark Souls series) and a complex world that is largely randomly generated.

The game offers the possibility to choose one of four races: humans, elves, dwarves, or orcs. In the course of the game, we develop our character using separate paths, classes, and skills. We also have the opportunity to acquire new equipment (among other things, thanks to the implemented system of crafting). During the game, we also make choices that shape our relationship with individual factions, which in some cases leads to unlocking new tasks.

Developers have also prepared an editor, which enables us to shape some aspects of the game.

Game modes

Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms can be played solo or with others. The main mode is the story campaign that can be played in the company of up to three other players (either locally or via the Internet). During the game, we can both support our colleagues and compete with them.

Technical aspects

Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms offers decent three-dimensional visuals that resembles many other isometric RPG such as Baldur's Gate and Pillars of Eternity, although it certainly stands out from the best (e.g. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire or Divinity: Original Sin 2). The title is characterized by a subdued artistic style, which well reflects the fairly down-to-earth climate of the land.
