A Nightmare on Elm Street is an arcade game from 1989, produced by Westwood Associates (better known as Westwood Studios). The program refers to Wes Craven's film of the same title, which tells the story of a group of teenagers fighting a psychopathic murderer - Freddym Kruger, murdering their victims in a dream.

Developed by Westwood Associates the game is very loosely associated with the original film. The plot has been reduced to an absolute minimum - the user must therefore suffice that his virtual friends are in great danger, and the only way to save them is to invade Freddy's estate and locate the prisoners.

At the beginning of the game we choose the protagonist from among six available characters. Heroes have different levels of life energy and magical energy, as well as a special skill that makes it easier to fight monsters at a later stage of the game. After making the decision, the user moves to the streets of Springwood, where a great escape from Freddie Kruger begins. Avoiding the fire of contact with the murderer, it is important to find a psychopath's home where all our friends are imprisoned. After reaching the villa, we start the right struggle.

The ownership of A Nightmare on Elm Street is divided into several levels, which are connected to each other by ladders. In order to get to the passage, you first have to overcome a huge maze, which is full of enemies. We dispose of the latter by means of special weapons, as well as other tools of extermination found during the journey. In addition to fighting, the player is also forced to find the levers and keys that open access to the next parts of the complex.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is characterized by simple, but clear graphics (the action is observed from a bird's eye view, as in Gauntlet), as well as poor quality soundtrack. A very important and unheard of in other productions of this type is the ability to save the state of the game at any time of the struggle.
