9 Monkeys of Shaolin

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a 2D beat 'em up game (it features 3D models, but there is no depth of field). The gameplay references such classic games of the 1990s as e.g. Battle Toads or Golden Axe. It was also inspired by classic kung-fu movies, and it was developed by Russian company Sobaka Studio, known mostly for Redeemer.

Plot

You play as Wei Cheng, a Chinese peasant, who's trying to avenge his family and friends, killed by pirates.

Mechanics

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a typical 2D beat 'em up game. You see your character from the side, as the production utilizes a side-scroll perspective. The gameplay involves moving left and right, and eliminating enemies. You can use three combat styles: on the ground, in the air, and utilizing mysterious magical seals. As the game progresses, the protagonist develops his skills and learn new abilities. He also earns useful items, such as various pole weapons.

Game mode

9 Monkeys of Shaolin was developed primarily as a single player game. The campaign features several dozens of varied levels (e.g. village, ship, monastery, or ancient ruins). The game also features a local multiplayer co-op mode for two players.

Technical aspects

Despite the 2D gameplay, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin features nicely done 3D visuals. The style was inspired by the aesthetics of the Far East, where the story is set, but also utilizes mystical and fantasy elements. The atmosphere is only strengthened by an interesting color palette.
