Old-school, two-dimensional arcade game by Nitrome studio, in which we play the role of a man fluttering in a dream. The aim of the game is to reach the end of each stage and gather all the pigeons scattered on the board along the way.
8bit Doves, released on AND and iOS, is an old-school arcade game in which we travel through two-dimensional levels, collecting the titular pigeons. The game was developed by Nitrome, known mainly from simple browser games. The studio debuted in 2013 with Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage. The concept of 8bit Doves was developed during the #nitromejam event, during which studio employees created simple games in front of players, and viewers could vote for the most interesting projects.
Mechanics
We play the role of a man trapped in virtual reality, who can spread his wings and fulfill his eternal dreams of flying in a dream. The game is about crossing simple 2D levels filled with moving walls, acceleration zones and other traps. Our goal is to reach the end of a stage and gather all the pigeons scattered along the way. This seemingly simple task, however, is hindered by the relatively high inertia of our hero, which translates into the inability to make a sudden turn in any direction.
The controls are limited to two virtual buttons, responsible for flying up and down. 8bit Doves offers three thematically diverse sets of levels, the first of which was taken from the browser's prototype.
Technical aspects
The old-school atmosphere of 8bit Doves is emphasized by simple, monochromatic graphics, reminiscent of productions from the 8-bit era and the first Game Boy.
