OpenCritic
Another installment in a series of SEGA's jRPGs that emphasize both tactical and strategic aspects; the franchise has its origins in 2009, on the Nintendo DS handhelds. The plot combines threads from the previous iterations, and is set in three different epochs. Thus the player is taken 10 thousand years back and visits the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Then the game fasts-forward to 2100, and the action now takes place in Tokyo.

We Got This Covered: 4.5 / 5 by Jowi Meli
Sega's American branch made the right call bringing this one overseas — it's one of the best RPGs available on 3DS. Full to bursting with charming characters, gorgeous fantasy worlds and addictive turn-based combat, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD makes me wonder why Western gamers didn't see this series sooner.
Nintendo Life: 9 / 10 by Morgan Sleeper
With top-class character customization, a delightfully different combat system and a slick nature-futuristic style, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is a fantastic addition to the 3DS' JRPG library.
EGM: 8 / 10 by Mollie L Patterson
While it gets bogged down by story and character elements that I found to be the opposite of fun far too often, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD offers up a stellar RPG experience that’s stuffed full of enjoyable gameplay mechanics and ideas.
7th Dragon III Code: VFD Description
7th Dragon III Code: VFD is the fourth part of the series of strategy and tactical RPGs. The game was developed by SEGA. It is worth adding, however, that previous versions of the 7th Dragon were created thanks to the no longer existing Japanese Imageepoch studio. The series debuted in 2009 on Nintendo DS. The first game, called 7th Dragon, took place 5,000 years into the future, where dragons control 80% of the Earth's surface and decimated humanity is trying to resist them. The other two parts of the series were released on PSP and were prequels. Both 7th Dragon 2020 from 2011 as well as 7th Dragon 2020-II took place in post-apocalyptic Tokyo, which was destroyed by dragons.
Plot
The story in 7th Dragon III Code: VFD combines the plotlines from the previous games, and its action takes place in three different historical epochs. In the first of them, set 10 thousand years B.C., we will visit the underwater kingdom of Atlantis built by Rushe, a highly developed civilization. In the next part of the campaign, we move to the Japanese capital in 2100. Tokyo and the whole country is still trying to recover from the attack and damage caused by dragons in 7th Dragon 2020. The last part takes place in Eden, the place where the first 7th Dragon took place. The campaign focuses on the efforts of the Japanese corporation Nodens, which wants to stop the awakening of the titular seventh dragon - its arrival will mean the end of humanity.
Mechanics
7th Dragon III Code: VFD is a typical tactical jRPG. The creators did not decide on great revolutions. Instead, they opted for developing the gameplay mechanics found in 7th Dragon 2020 and 7th Dragon 2020-II. The fights are turn-based. Players take control of a team of up to nine people assigned to one of the 8 character classes (Samurai, God-Hand, Rune-Knight, Fortuner, Mage, Agent, Duelist, Vanisher), which are associated with different historical eras. During battles, we can use standard attacks as well as special skills, which are unlocked with the progress of each hero. We get main and side quests in our base located in the headquarters of Nodens corporation. This is our starting point for new adventures. The base also serves as a shopping spot where we can purchase new equipment, as well as interact with independent characters (the title has a well-developed dating system).
Technical aspects
7th Dragon III Code: VFD uses a 3D engine, offering graphic design similar to that of PSP. Character models are presented in a deformed form and with altered proportions (the so-called chibi style). The soundtrack to 7th Dragon III Code: VFD was composed by Yuzo Koshiro.
