688 Attack Sub is a realism-based submarine simulator developed by Electronic Arts at the end of the 1980s. In the role of ship's commander we have to deal with all aspects related to the control of the unit.

In 688 Attack Sub we play the role of submarine captain and focus on the execution of the tasks entrusted by the command. The Electronic Arts product offers ten hypothetical Cold War missions, six of which can be played twice, each time on a different side of the conflict. When we decide to join the U.S. fleet, we get a Los Angeles type unit (title 688), while in the colours of the Soviet Union we mostly use Alpha type nuclear ships.

The Captain in 688 Attack Sub takes care of absolutely everything: he accepts command orders, identifies targets with sonar or periscope, actively directs the ship, specifying the points to which it should go, decides on the speed of the unit and its draught, finally loads torpedoes and fires them when he deems it appropriate to attack. A part of the duties can be transferred to the on-board equipment - e.g. an autopilot is available - but in general it is up to the player to decide on any key actions. The game offers a lot of freedom, so some tasks can be performed in different ways.
