33 Immortals is an online roguelike action game with RPG elements. It was developed and published by a Canadian team Thunder Lotus Games - creators of popular indie games, such as Jotun, Sundered and Spiritfarer.
Plot
33 Immortals is an interpretation of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The playable character is a damned soul, meant to suffer endless torment due to sinful earthly existence. The soul joins an immortal rebellion against the divine judgment, fighting for its eternal life.
Mechanics
The rebels face hordes of monsters and divine bosses, forming titular teams of 33 people. To prevail in fast-paced combat somewhat reminiscent of MMO games, players must co-operate.
They must skillfully choose tactics, abilities, relics - which provide permanent upgrades - and weapons. Weapons grant a particular advantage in combat, drawing power from sins and virtues. Only complete teams making use of powerful group maneuvers can prevail in the most challenging encounters, which, as befitting a roguelike, can be attempted numerous times, each time being slightly stronger than before.
Technical aspects
33 Immortals makes use of isometric perspective. The visuals resemble hand-drawn animation. The game is fully online, lacking a singleplayer mode and requiring constant Internet connection. On its release date, it was added to PC/Xbox Game Pass.
