Plot

The action of Read Only Memories takes place in Neo-San Francisco in 2064. The player assumes the role of a not-very-famous journalist whose dull life changes once he meets a machine named Turing – the world’s first AI capable of independent thinking. Its creator has been abducted and it is the player-character who, according to the statistical calculations, has the biggest chance of finding him. The journalist and the machine will also have to uncover the secrets of the metropolis and influence the direction the world takes. On the journey, you will meet a multiplicity of strange characters that play key roles in Neo-San Francisco.

Read Only Memories offers a cyberpunk, retrofuturistic vision of the future – the image of the future world that was prevalent in the 1980s.

Mechanics

Read Only Memories for SWITCH, PC and etc. is a classic adventure in which you spend most of your time on exploring the world, chatting with NPCs, collecting items, and solving clever and diverse puzzles. Additionally, the title offers arcade challenges, like combat and sneaking sequences. However, they also require a considerable amount of resourcefulness.

To a large extent, the campaign is non-linear. During gameplay you can meet several different characters – the way you interact with them, along with the decisions you take during the game, significantly influence how the plot unfolds. Moreover, most of the puzzles and challenges can be approached in a number of alternative ways.

Technical aspects

The retrofuturistic style of Read Only Memories is achieved by utilising old-school visuals that resemble 8-bit productions. The authors used pixelled graphics and a limited colour palette, which gives an impression of playing a cyberpunk game from 1980s.
