20,000 Leagues Above the Clouds is a steampunk strategy game with RPG elements. It is also the first game created by The Brain studio.

Story

The action takes place in a fantasy world, which consists of flying archipelago. Humans and other races travel between those islands using flying ships. Players assume the role of the captain of one of the ships. The game gives the players a free hand in terms of our hero’s objectives. We can do quests, engage in trade, gather resources, or become a pirate. Between missions, we dock at ports, where we stock up on supplies and buy ship upgrades. There, we also meet with many talkative NPCs. The conversations fill the players in on the lore of the world, the news, and our competitions’ whereabouts.

Mechanics

At the beginning of the game the players have to create their own character, we have to choose a name, sex, and portrait. As in RPG games, our choices will shape the personality of our character. Dialogue options influence the way the game unfolds and impact in-game alliances. The game also allows romancing some of the characters.

Technical aspects

The controls are similar to RTS games, a click of the mouse button tells our ship where to go. The world is fully 3D, so we are also allowed to travel up and down. Lower strata are, however, characterized by high pressure and unless we upgrade the ship beforehand, we can end up with the ship getting destroyed on the way. Both the ship and its crew possess a number of special skills, which enrich the experience significantly and add tactical depth to it.
