OpenCritic
A flight combat MMO game by Russian studio Wargaming.net (known from e.g. World of Tanks), utilizing a free-to-play model with microtransactions. In World of Warplanes, you can play as a pilot of a fighter or bomber plane and participate in spectacular aerial battles with dozens of other planes.
World of Warplanes is an aerial MMO based on free-to-play model and micropayments. The game was produced by Wargaming.net Studios, mainly known as the creators of World of Tanks. The economy system of the game is common with other online games of the studio, namely World of Tanks and World of Battleships, which means that the virtual currency and the experience gained in one of these titles can also be used in the other two.
The game allows you to take control of one of the many aircrafts from the so-called golden era of aviation - from the machines predating World War II through the first jet fighters used during the Korean War or prototypical models that were never actually manufactured (e.g. experimental aircrafts of the Third Reich). All the aircrafts have unique and authentic features. Along with the progress in the game, you can expand and improve them, thus increasing their combat capacity. Each major step in the virtual pilot’s career opens up a possibility of buying more advanced machines. Only the best can get to control the jets.
The planes are divided into four classes - light or carrier-based fighters designed for maneuver combat, heavily armed fighters, and assault machines that specialize in attacks on ground targets. The standard game mode, designed specifically for World of Warplanes, is the Supremacy, in which you have to knock down all the enemy machines or win supremacy on the battlefield by e.g. destroying enemy ground facilities. Planes, of course, are much faster than tanks, therefore the maps are larger than those in World of Tanks. Basing the game on a fictional conflict left the authors with a lot of freedom in level designing. The game features levels located on all the continents and there are also urban battles.
World of Warplanes does not pretend to be a simulator. Instead, the controls, as well as the interface, resemble an action game. In contrast, the elements that do not require direct control from players, such as flight physics and damage system, are quite realistic. While in the air, planes behave quite realistically. Accordingly with a common trend, the game offers many social features that allow players to communicate, organize competitions, and join clans.

In the end, is World of Warplanes worth your time and possibly your hard-earned cash? I think it is as it is fun and something different than the multitude of FPS's out in the market today, and certainly anyone who is an aircraft enthusiast should check it out. Since the game is free to play – with a pay option for extra perks – I'd recommend giving it a shot. Strap yourself in and take to the skies, you won't regret it.

World of Warplanes needs some tune-ups before it can soar
games(TM):
World Of Warplanes is a neat addition to Wargaming's repertoire, but it all just feels a little too shallow to really make waves.
