Developing a hero | Basics Fable Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
The process of hero-building sure is one of the strongest points of the game, as only some of his statistics are under our direct control, while all the others are merely effects of our actions. When it comes to behavior, everything is in your hands. Whether you want to be an honorable protector of the weak or a horned demon of destruction, just go ahead and do your thing.
The basic statistics that we can control through the green portal in the Heroes' Guild determine the gaming style we prefer. There are 4 different types of experience in the game: general (visualized by green orbs left by slain enemies), melee (gained by attacking enemies with melee weapons), Skill (the same, but with ranged weapons, plus the use of stealth abilities), and Will (rewards the use of magic). The hero can be brought up in these three disciplines, as we spend the experience points to learn new skills and upgrade the ones we have already gained.
A noble knight or a gruesome demon? Everything depends on you.
Let's state the obvious - Fable is a game that enables you to create a completely all-around hero and maximize all of his stats. Achieving this doesn't even require the use of any particularly malevolent tricks (which are quite common as a result of unusual game saving system).
The most essential thing about gaining gigantic amounts of experience is the so called Combat Multiplier. All the XP we gain is multiplied by this number, which raises fast when we deal lots of damage and are engaged in some heavy fighting. The problem is, each time we are hit it tends to fall rapidly. And here comes our favorite Will ability, the Physical Shield (in most RPGs known as the Mana Shield), which causes mana to drop instead of health when an enemy gets us. While it's on, we are able to rocket our Combat Multiplier without any problems. The last thing we need is a place, where enemies respawn as instantly as possible. Try the Undead, which appear in cemetery areas north of Bowerstone.
Our protagonist's appearance depends on a few factors. The most basic ones are alignment (good or evil) and age - rising each time we spend our experience points on some abilities (the maximum age level is 65, we don't age any more once we are that old). There is a possibility to lower your age twice in the game. You'll find the full info in bronze quests' section, Temple of Avo and The Chapel of Skorm.
Other stats that play an important role in our hero's virtual life are attractiveness and scariness. They determine other Albion inhabitants' reactions for your presence. The main way to change their values is to take care of your clothing, haircut and tattooing. It's up to you, whether you want to be feared or loved.
