Star Wars Galaxies was a full-fledged MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe and enjoyed considerable popularity. The game was notable for sandbox character, allowing players a lot of freedom in character building and the gameplay itself. In addition, the economy was dictated by the community, as were many other aspects of the game – setting prizes for the heads of people who liked PvP, creating trade groups or alliances was the order of the day.
The problem with Star Wars Galaxies was the way in which the game was developed, as the developers largely ignored the needs and opinions of players. Subsequent updates have significantly reduced the complexity of this production, offering depth and nurturing the original title. In time, the creators admitted they had made a mistake, but it was too late – Star Wars Galaxies missed the window of opportunity, and the brand-new Star Wars: The Old Republic also entered the fray. BioWare's new MMORPG debuted five days after the old game was officially shut down.
EverQuest Next
The sequels to the EverQuest series are milestones in the MMORPG genre, so the announcement of the new installment of the series aroused a lot of excitement. Unfortunately, EverQuest Next never came out – it was cancelled and work on it was discontinued. It's a shame, because the game looked interesting, offering a new take at MMO. Players' actions were supposed to influence the environment, allowing them to change the appearance of the surrounding space, to freely build or destroy elements of the terrain. We can only hope one day this project can be resurrected.
