A few months before the release of The Wild Hunt, the starving witcher fans saw an unusual spin-off of the series, forcing Geralt, Letho and Zoltan to take part in duels within the rules heavily inspired by games such as League of Legends and Dota 2. However, The Witcher Battle Arena, developed by Fuero Games, was not a mere clone, and offered a handful of unique solutions.
Many of these stemmed from bringing the gameplay formula to mobile platforms. In comparison to other MOBA games, matches in the Battle Arena were simpler and much shorter – usually lasting about ten minutes. Each player would choose their preferred hero from the universe and join a trio of fighters, who would develop characters, collect gold, buy equipment and, most importantly, fight fierce battles. The objective was to gain and maintain control of three obelisks, and success depended mainly on good teamwork and strategic use of the skills characteristic of each hero. While the duels themselves wer every dynamic, between them, we were able to modify our characters quite significantly, adapting them to our preferred style of play.
The game wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't poor, either. The decision to move to free-to-play, and the popularity of The Witcher brand as a whole initially allowed a growing base of players to gather around the title. Unfortunately, despite good support after the release, with new content and numerous improvements, the production failed to sustain enough interest to make its development viable. The lifespan The Witcher Battle Arena proved very short – the servers were shut down on December 31, 2015, less than a year after its official debut.
