Dungeon Keeper

  1. Genre: strategy

  3. Developer: Bullfrog Productions
  4. Platform: PC

In 1997, Dungeon Keeper was probably the first game to allow you to consciously play the role of an evil hero. Instead of traversing dungeons to kill demons, which was common in games such as the cult Diablo, here we play as a demon guarding our dungeons, so that no knights roam around in search of fame and wealth. We built our won dungeons, with designated chambers for tortures, pantry or training quarters, so that our filthy orcs (and other creatures) can feel at home and more willing to chase away potential warriors in shiny armor.

Dungeon Keeper offered a unique mix of genres: RTS and the so-called god game. Peter Molyneux from Bullfrog was basically the inventor of god games that started with his Populous, also an RTS. Although we had no direct influence on combat, we could watch the fights pan out from first-person perspective of the selected mob. It's a pity that the modern attempt to revive the IP has only produced a poor mobile game full of microtransactions.
