Best FPS Games 2022 - Gotta Frag 'Em All!
Here are the most interesting FPS games due to come in 2022. It hasn't been an easy time for all kinds of shooter games, but in the coming months, there will be some really solid productions that we ought to mention.
Considering the threat of world war three that still seems to be smoldering around Kiev, first-person shooters may not be the best choice right now. However, we all hope that peace will come as soon as possible, and that we'll be able to play FPS games again without a nasty feeling in the back of our heads. Due to the Russian invasion, the releases of some games – such as the long-awaited STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl – have been postponed to an undefined future. Below, you can read about FPS games that fans of the genre will be playing in 2022.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
- Release date: March 25, 2022
- Genre: action, fantasy, looter shooter
- Publisher: 2K Games
Any fans of Borderlands games in the room? If so, they're probably anxious to play Tina Tina's Wonderlands – a production that is confusingly similar to the third part of the series of games taking place on the Pandora planet. The similarity in the visual setting is hardly surprising, if we take into account the fact that Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is an extension of the concept of a crazy RPG session conducted by the eponymous Tiny Tina, which we have already experienced in the DLC for Borderlands 2.
It sounds complicated, but it really isn't – Tiny Tina's adventure is Borderlands 3 on steroids (if you can imagine that). The adventure is set in a slightly different vibe – this time, instead of post-apo, we are dealing with fantasy. We have a huge dragon and his minions to defeat, an unimaginable amount of loot to collect and the weirdest guns to shoot. And you have to admit that shooting in the third part of the Borderlands alone was just perfection, so it should be no different here!
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction
- Release date: January 20, 2022
- Genre: action, tactical, horror, co-op
- Publisher: Ubisoft
Before the release of Extraction, fans of Rainbow Six: Siege split into two, antagonized camps. One group treated the new game from Ubisoft as a simple cash grab, imitating co-op games like Left 4 Dead. On the other side of the barricade, there were fans enjoying the novelties in their favorite series and developing a taste for fighting space monsters with a strong emphasis on cooperation.
It turned out that the latter were quite right, and the former... a little wrong. It was true that the game was very expensive at launch. On the other hand, it offered a lot of fun – without really mimicking Valve's zombie shooters. The gunplay was fun, the locations were atmospheric, the difficulty level was demanding and the formula of raids consisting of three randomly-assigned missions – these are the elements that give Extraction enough legs to yield long hours of fun, often giving players the "one more match" syndrome.
Halo Infinite
- Release date: December 8, 2021
- Genre: action, science fiction, co-op
- Publisher: Xbox Game Studios / Microsoft Studios
Halo Infinite was scorned after the official trailer in 2020 – mostly for focusing on now meme-worthy Craig and the rather unappealing, even quite archaic visual setting. After the release, however, people forgot about all that – despite the graphics that looked scary at the lowest settings, the embarrassing memes were superseded by an outpour of enthusiasm.
Unexpectedly, Halo Infinite turned out to be one of the best games of 2021 – journalists and players praised almost every aspect of the game, from music and a well-devoted, old-school shooting model offering various weapons, to a really well-designed open world. Fans of the series should be pleased, and fans of shooters in general – who have not had contact with the Halo series before – should definitely try this game. Especially since its online module is available for free (with a few restrictions), and it only takes buying the game to play the single-player campaign.
Call of Duty Vanguard
- Release date: November 5, 2021
- Genre: action, World War 2
- Publisher: Activision Blizzard
Call of Duty: Vanguard was the last Call of Duty released in the annual crunch of the series' releases. And that's great, because CoD started to resemble FIFA – the same game with minor graphical updates released every year, without a clear-cut idea for itself. It was no different with Vanguard, whose plot – though filled with spectacular battles, the campaign that was divided between a few different protagonists fighting on different fronts of WW2 (the old-school way) could be finished in 5 hours.
The quality of the zombie mode – a key element of gameplay in subsequent Call of Duty games for many – remains a matter of taste. Some will say that it's poorer and more boring than the one in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – others will praise the it because it's more accessible to new players. Vanguard, however, is primarily about multiplayer, and the gameplay here maintains the very high quality that's to be expected from the series – the creators even attempted to introduce partial environment destruction, so the maps change appearance as battles rage on.
Hell let loose
- Release date: July 27, 2021
- Genre: tactical shooter
- Publisher: Team17
If you were disappointed with this year's Battlefield – the unfortunate 2042, criticized by virtually all players – and you're bored with the next Call of Duty installments, including the above-mentioned Vanguard, Hell Let Loose could be exactly what you need. Maybe this title isn't very recognizable among fans of virtual shooters, whose interest has so far orbited around shooters from Electronic Arts and Activision – but last year, it made a lot of noise among fans of FPS war games.
Hell Let Loose, in addition to really nice graphics, offers the ability to participate in huge battles (two teams take part in one game – each consisting of fifty soldiers). Players can try one of the many classes of soldiers (14 of them!) and use realistic vehicles and weapons. In addition, we can get a taste of viscous combat at the frontline – by communicating not only on short range with the closest soldiers, but also using the command voice channels. This last aspect is particularly noteworthy – because in Hell Let Loose, players can play the role of both soldiers pushing the front line on huge maps, and... A commander issuing orders and planning tactics for acquiring new strategic assets on the battlefield.
Escape from Tarkov (EFT)
- Release date: July 28, 2017 (beta)
- Genre: RPG-Survival-FPS
- Publisher: Battlestate Games
The creators of Escape From Tarkov describe their game as a hardcore and realistic action game mixing RPG and simulation with a pinch of MMO elements, with an engaging narrative background. And... it's hard to disagree with this extensive description of what Escape from Tarkov actually is. The game takes place in the eponymous city, where military factions fight for domination. However, the city is not fully open – it is divided into extensive maps, which come with different characteristics (forests, industrial, coastal, or a shopping center).
In Escape from Tarkov, players can become a representative of one of the three factions, but they cannot trust anyone too much – because by performing missions from NPCs and looking for loot, you can become either a victim or a tormentor of other players traveling in a given area. However, there are more features distinguishing it from other shooters. Among them, there's development of skills, which can be unlearned if they are not used for a long time, survival elements that may thwart our plans during the game (such as injuries, hunger or dehydration), as well as expansion of the hideout, in which – between individual matches – you can regenerate strength to continue combat, test your equipment and create completely new items.
CS:GO
- Release date: August 21, 2012
- Genre: shooter
- Publisher: Valve Corporation
Among shooters, few games can boast the status of a "cult" production – one of them is certainly Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Since 2012, CS:GO has continued down the path set by Valve almost 20 years ago – only that it offers an upgraded visual setting, while improving the overall impression of the game. The concept of the game is quite simple – Counter Strike is a basically the digital version of cops & robbers.
There are two teams: terrorists and anti-terrorists – the task of the former, in the basic gameplay variant, is either to eliminate the opponents or plant an explosive in a strategic place and defend this point until detonation. Counter-terrorists, in turn, must neutralize the opposing team – or, if it was planted, defuse the bomb before it explodes. There are also other game modes – such as hostage extraction or classic deathmatch. The game is free, but it's worth investing in an upgrade to prime status, which lowers the chances of encountering cheaters during online games (a paid account effectively scares off cheaters from trying to use hacks, which could result in a ban).
Deep Rock Galactic
- Release date: May 13, 2020
- Genre: co-op shooter
- Publisher: Coffee Stain Publishing
If you associate the fantastic race of short and stocky, often vulgar and quarrelsome bearded men who never say no to a drink – colloquially called dwarves – only with fantasy worlds straight from Tolkien's imagination, Deep Rock Galactic may slightly change this stereotype. In the game by Ghost Ship Games, we will play as a dwarf – or rather, its futuristic version, without the primitive, axe-based combat. Instead, we get powerful, futuristic guns. However, there will be room for pickaxes too – used to extract valuable ore – as well as for bloodthirsty monsters straight from science-fiction movies such as Space Soldiers.
The gameplay in Deep Rock Galactic is all about cooperation – the task of the dwarven team of up to four miners is to break through the corridors of cave complexes in search of valuable resources and eliminate bloodthirsty beasts. There are many advantages of the game – dividing players into classes responsible for various aspects of the mission, procedurally generated caves, or the extensive system of destruction that allows you to create your own corridors in the underground maze. Just don't forget to bring your torches, miners!
Apex Legends
- Release date: February 4, 2019
- Genre: Battle Royale
- Publisher: Electronic Arts
At one time, Apex Legends – a battle royale game by Respawn Entertainment, the creators of Titanfall, which was considered a phenomenon in the circles of fans of dynamic shooters and mechs – was a serious competitor to other BR titles, mainly Fortnite and PUBG. Fortnite is still on top today, but the Apex Legends' player base is still large, even though Electronic Arts hasn't dominated the market in the end.
The maps are smaller than in the case of other battle royale games, as is the pool of players taking part in a single match – up to 60, divided into in twenty, three-person teams. The unique abilities of each hero play a significant role. A well-thought-out combination of the title legends – and their skills – in the team is key to success and defeating the other teams. The shooting itself is a lot of fun – despite quite archetypal guns for FPS – and Apex Legends focuses primarily on dynamic clashes, combining gunplay with special skills and detailed movement of the characters. The game may seem chaotic at first, but this really is a great production for any battle royale fan!
Most anticipated FPS Games 2022
Ready or Not
- Release date: 2022
- Genre: action, tactical, co-op, indie
- Publisher: Void Interactive
Staying on the topic of tactical shooters, we cannot omit Ready or Not – a game that's been available in early access since December 2021. Fans of shooters who still remember the cult-classic SWAT 4, as well as people who enjoyed Rainbow Six Siege or Counter Strike, should be delighted. Here, we don't have operators with turbo abilities – just ordinary special weapons and tactics officers, ordinary bandits to neutralize, ordinary guns to shoot and, above all, five-person teams that must cooperate tightly to be able to eliminate the threat. Operational strategy must be mastered to perfection to make sure our operations don't result in collateral damage.
The game was created in cooperation with real police forces from around the world – the developers thus promise that you won't find a more realistic shooter offering such an advanced combat system. Here, practically everything is based on realism – from projectiles' trajectory and ricochets, through the way bullets penetrate various surfaces, to armor physics. You can play in co-op, but there's nothing stopping you from completing the single-player campaign with AI assistance. It is worth mentioning that despite its complexity, both character controls and team management is quite intuitive. Then you can always call a negotiator for help... Or a sniper.
Scorn
- Release date: 2022
- Genre: action, survival horror, science fiction
- Publisher: Ebb Software
We heard about Scorn back in 2014. Already then, Ebb Software studio offered the players an attractive vision of a gameplay bathed in grime, where almost every corner you cross, every weapon you reload and every opponent you face may induce undeniable gag reflexes. There are bones, tendons, and guts everywhere, plus living tissue enchanted into the scenery of endless hallways. After the announcements, the game was lost for a long time – with new gameplay materials appearing from time to time, but the temperature of expectations for this title cooled down as years passed.
Fortunately, we have a more specific announcement – the creators, after years of silence, finally announced that the game will hit store shelves in October 2022. This is good news – especially for those who are not indifferent to games like Agona and fans of Beksinski and other surrealist/horror painters and artists. One may only wonder if the creators will be able to meet the expectations of players – if the gameplay is at least as refined as the disgusting audiovisual setting, it should be possible.
Six Days In Fallujah
- Release date: 2022
- Genre: action, tactical, co-op
- Publisher: Victura
Tired of the rudimentary plots of today's top shooters that only take a few hours to complete? If the answer to this question is yes, and you're sick of franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield, perhaps you should be interested in Six Days in Fallujah, developed by Highwire Games.
Six Days in Fallujah has been in development for over a decade. After announcing that a tactical shooter will recount real events that transpired during the battle of Fallujah. This information sent shock waves across the industry media – people expect games to be inspired by real conflicts, rather than offer a historical reconstruction based on interviews with experts and soldiers that participated in the war. Aside from that, there was also news of abandoning the project, which came as a result of many concerns raised by the veterans. The game, however, survived, and it was reported again in 2021 that it was still in development – Six Days in Fallujah will be released in 2022. We're very excited to play a shooter that treats war seriously and isn't just about mindlessly shooting hosts of mobs.
Warhammer 40K Darktide
- Release date: September 13, 2022
- Genre: action, science fiction, shooter, co-op
- Publisher: Fatshark
There have been several attempts to transfer gameplay from the format beloved by RTS fans to another genre in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. There was a quite solid third-person shooter, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, as well as Necromunda: Hired Gun released last year, which was FPP. It will be no different in Warhammer 40K Darktide, which promises to be a very violent FPS.
Darktide is a production of Fatshark studio – the authors of the Vermintide series set in the universe of the classic Warhammer. The game is based on co-op combat for up to 4 players, who face hordes of enemies. In addition to melee weapons, we will use a number of guns – emphasis on futuristic rifles is the biggest change in contrast to Vermintide, along with setting the action in the Tertium hive-city, and shifting from fantasy to dark sci-fi, as well as numerous technological improvements. Was it worth the wait? We will see about that this spring, as we proceed to destroying heretical worshippers and the chaos engulfing the land in the name of the God Emperor.
Atomic Heart
- Release date: 2022
- Genre: action, shooter, science fiction, indie
- Publisher: Mundfish
When thinking about first-person shooters coming in 2022, we were mostly hyped to play Atomic Heart – a production from the Russian studio Mundfish. The most exciting part is the game's very artistic direction. Retrofuturism in the eastern version is just so original – the locations design has some crazy vibes, and opponents that look like a combination of advanced AI, pure evil and matryoshka dolls.
And although the story concept may not seem overly ambitious – we will be playing a special agent Nechaev, who has to infiltrate a Soviet base taken over by bloodthirsty machines and zombies – the atmosphere of Soviet Union's brutalist architecture does a tremendous job here. This game was dubbed the Eastern European BioShock – apart from traditional guns, we will be able to use gadgets of unreal technological power of the USSR, as well as special, quasi-magical powers.
