Professor – who is that?
Before we were introduced to the sinister Wild Hunt, the first Witcher game featured the Salamandra, a powerful and influential criminal group profiting from the fisstech trade and who managed to steal Witcher secrets. Azar Javed was the leader of Salamandra who had a right-hand man in form of the Professor, an elusive assassin.
The Professor is one of the main antagonists of the first part of The Witcher from 2007. The antagonist appears only in Witcher games, as the action of the first installment takes place five years after the events from the book, but his prototype was Ralf Blunden, nicknamed "the Professor", who appeared in Time of Contempt. The Professor was exceptionally clever and educated, and had a very rich vocabulary. He repeatedly warned his employer Javed of the dangers of playing with Geralt, which he paid with his own life.
Why do players hate the Professor?
"Because of his overly cool glasses," – one post reads. Such small matters sometimes have a life of their own – the famed glasses appeared in Hearts of Stone – an expansion for The Witcher 3. Professor was involved in all kinds of shady business. He made Geralt angry by attacking the fortress Kaer Morhen, where at the time the protagonist healed his wounds, and together with other members of the Salamandra stole the secrets of mutagens, murdered a young witcher apprentice Leo and escaped unharmed.
The pursuit of Salamandra and the Professor is our main goal for most of the game and the driving force behind the adventure in The Witcher. So it's no wonder that we feel for Geralt's and just want to catch the bastard. As he is a completely evil character that wants to destroy us. For some, the desire to avenge the death of a young witcher from the beginning of the game probably comes into play here as well. But a worthy and savvy opponent can also be properly appreciated – there's no shortage of opinions among players admiring the Professor for his arrogance, his confidence, or just for being a good... ...son of a bitch.
