Reconstruction of Old Town Warsaw after WW2
- Duration: 7 years
- When: 1945 – 1952
This was only the first stage of reconstruction, symbolically completed by the dissolution of the Office of Reconstruction of the Capital. Further work continued for years.
There's still a while left before all you Samurais will have a chance to burn the city. But you know that. Keanu Reeves won't visit you until December 2020. History shows that such a task can be completed with hellish efficiency and horrendous pace.
During World War 2, 85% of Warsaw was literally levelled by artillery shelling and a bombing campaign. After the war, however, a beautiful story was made by the Poles who strove to rebuild the historical old town, and the rest of the city. It took them about seven years to complete the former stage.
After the war, the city, just like Dresden, Berlin, or Hiroshima, was mostly a rubble. Imagine seeing your own city in complete ruins... The extent of the damage was so great that the authorities considered moving the capital south-west, to Lodz. In the end, this idea was abandoned.
Warsaw was rebuilt by a nation-wide effort, as the city was not only destroyed, but also largely depopulated. Workers were recruited all over the country, and flocked to the capital, often establishing their homes and families there. It is sometimes said that the reconstruction of Warsaw is one of the wonders of the world. The scale of that undertaking was immense.
Anyway, in 1952 the old town was finally reconstructed, symbolically completing the rebirth of the city after the blaze of war. In other words, no matter how dramatic it may sound, the Poles rebuilt Warsaw in real life faster than CD Projekt Red burned down their city in Cyberpunk 2077. That's a Platinum for Poland!
