The player takes on the role of commander of the Star Wolves ship formation, wandering through a dangerous galaxy. The action of StarCraft: Brood War takes place after the events of the base game. Even though the Overmind has been destroyed, the Zerg still pose a threat, and a new danger emerges. The central character of the expansion, around whom most of the story revolves, is Sarah Kerrigan – a Terran infected by the Zerg. She became the most powerful Overmind – the Zerg Queen.

The game is set in a near future, when the United States is struck by a pandemic. Players become members of a secret governmental organization called The Division, which tries to contain the chaos spreading across New York City. The gameplay focuses on rivalry between small groups of players.

Production is inspired mainly by the first installment of the Fallout series. Action of Underrail is set in the far future where Earth's surface has become uninhabitable due to a global disaster, and the remnants of the human race took shelter in an underground structure, that formerly served as an extensive subway network.
