Yet Another Zombie Survivors (YAZS) - Potato Explained
Yet Another Zombie Survivors developers implemented some interesting easter eggs. One of them is very vague - a simple potato. Here you will learn more about why it is in the game.
Vampire Survivors was a spark that reignited whole industry’s fascination with top-down, simple, yet very satisfying action games. It is amazing to see how game developers take this basic idea of walking around and slaying hordes of enemies with minimal input from a player and build new mechanics upon it. This plain core gameplay loop combined with often simple graphics allows many game studios or even individual creators to take on it and make their own variation of this reborn genre. Developers from an independent Awesome Game Studio introduced their new production basing on this very concept – Yet Another Zombie Survivors. The title debuted recently in Steam’s Early Access program and was warmly received by the community. Upon playing the game there is an “interesting” item that you can obtain – a potato. Let’s explain what it does and why it is in Zombie Survivors.
Potato in Zombie Survivors explained
As YAZS is packed with pop culture references, there is one that doesn’t fit anywhere… or does it? While roaming the map, you will find crates with useful items from which you can choose one to aid you in battle. One doesn’t quite seem to fit – a potato.
Why is there a useless potato in the game?
It is not entirely out of place. It is a running joke implemented by the developers. It reaches out at least as far as the beta tests of YAZS. Along your way, you will be able to collect 3 potatoes just to be presented with familiar looking text – “The potato is a lie”. It is obviously a reference to Portal and their “The cake is a lie” slogan.
Not only there is potato item in the game, but players have also found yet another reference to this vegetable. It is possible that on the post run summary you will see a string of ones and zeros looking like that:
010100000100111101010100010000010101010001001111
After translating this binary code, you will learn that it simply says “Potato”.
On Steam’s forums, the developers play along with their fans by taking part in healthy discussions about this vegetable. Even though one of the creators claimed to remove the potato in a beta update, it seems like the tater still made it unharmed to the Early Access release of Yet Another Zombie Survivors.
If you would like to give the game a try and look for more easter eggs, YAZS offers a demo that you can download from its steam page by clicking a “Download Demo” button located in the right sidebar of the page, just under “Is this game relevant to you?” section.
