Xbox Criticized for Allegedly Using AI to Advertise Indie Games
After gamers began to criticize Microsoft for its alleged use of AI-created graphics, the image quickly disappeared from the web.
The end of the year is traditionally a period of great summaries. Microsoft was also tempted to do so, and on December 27 via its ID@Xbox profile on X asked its fans what their favorite indie games released in 2023 were. There would be nothing unusual about it, if it weren't for the fact that the post was accompanie by a suspicious-looking graphic.
According to Internet users, the image, which depicted several people merrily playing in the snow, was generated with the help of artificial intelligence. This is to be evidenced by, among other things, strange black lines running in some places of the image, and caricatured faces of the characters shown on it. Anyway, see for yourself.
As is not difficult to guess, the alleged use of AI-generated images did not please many Xbox fans, who began to criticize the company for "saving money" on the work of human artists..
Other developers, led by freelance programmer Rami Ismail, also joined the discussion, and directed the following words at ID@Xbox:
"Can't believe ID@Xbox spends years working super hard, building up goodwill, funding games, building trust - genuine connection with creative, stubborn, idealistic independent developers - and then posts some horrifying AI art to pinch just a few dollars. Pay for art, please."
And although Microsoft has not taken a position on the matter, a confirmation of the allegations against the company can be taken from the fact that the post in question has already been removed from X.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that Microsoft is getting bolder and bolder in taking advantage of the opportunities provided by artificial intelligence. Last year we reported that the Redmond giant has partnered with Inworld AI, a company that integrates artificial intelligence into video games. It can therefore be expected that in the future not only graphics, but also the games themselves will bear the marks of AI application.
