WoW The War Within Reveals Inconspicuous Secret in Region's Capital. Players Have Many Theories About Its Possible Meaning
Who left behind the shoes and lute in the village with the DLC? There are many answers and any of them could be true.
Last month, the first season of World of Warcraft: The War Within launched. Although the MMO has recently gone through a tough period related to the loss of long-term data, players are still engaging in the fantastic world, discovering new treats along the way. Not all have an obvious explanation, an example of which is the latest find from Dornogal - the capital of the expansion.
Who is the mysterious musician?
One of the users of WoW's subReddit drew attention to detail: a set consisting of a lute, shoes, and a feather left on a tower near the city. The players began to wonder what such an easter egg could mean - especially considering the lack of other details.
A significant portion of the commentators considered the equipment to be a reference to the bard class, which currently does not exist in the world of WoW. While such "teasers" are usually met with enthusiasm, fans of Blizzard's MMO reacted quite skeptically - quoting one of them, the community must first cool down after the controversy related to the Evoker class (introduced in the Dragonflight expansion from 2022). Of course, this does not change the fact that some players would love to see a bard as a specialization for Rogue.
What else could it be about, if not about the bard class? Perhaps about another famous musician! Fans mention, among others, Jaskier from The Witcher or Alfire from Baldur's Gate 3, who "never finished her song" - then the boots and lute would be her memorial. Still others suggest Puss in Boots, although the music wasn't exactly his trademark.
Reference to a fantasy classic
A certain internet user left a more complex response, considering the find to be a reference to a high fantasy book titled The Name of the Wind. This is a fairly popular fantasy series by Patrick Rothfuss, whose protagonist – a man named Kvothe – is a musician whose possessions are limited to a lute and a pair of shoes.
When Kvothe (...) lived in Tarbean, he was homeless and left his belongings on a roof similar to this one [from WoW]. They were just a lute and a pair of shoes. Without spoiling, the book puts a huge emphasis on the name of the wind, the knowledge of which enables it to be controlled. I believe that this is represented by a feather.

The author of the comment also adds that Kvothe saw the name of the wind for the first time on a tower, which in his opinion creates too much of a coincidence compared to The War Within. Some players found this enough to give the novel a chance - however, if you belong to this group, we must disappoint you. The second volume of the series was released in 2011, and Rothfuss (similar to George R.R. Martin in the case of The Winds of Winter) is still working on a sequel.
