World of Warcraft Loses 3 Million Subscribers In Three Months
The latest financial report of Activision Blizzard reveals that the number of subscribers of World of Warcraft dropped to 7.1 million as of the end of March this year. This means that about 3 million players said goodbye to the game within three months.
At the end of 2014 the popular MMORPG World of Warcraft could boast more than 10 million subscribers. The first months of this year, however, saw a large decline in interest. The latest financial report of Activision Blizzard reveals that the first quarter of 2015 ended with the number of paid subscriptions dropping to 7.1 million. This means that about 3 million players left the game within three months. The number of subscribers is therefore comparable to the one before the premiere of Warlords of Draenor. Back then, World of Warcraft had 7.3 million subscribers. Still, the production remains the most popular subscription-based MMORPG.
The last expansion to WoW sold 3.3 million copies on its first day, thus making the famous MMORPG once again exceed the threshold of 10 million subscribers. Now, however, it seems that the add-on no longer attracts the gamers. Perhaps the next expansion, which has been in the works for some time now, will manage to reignite the interest in the game.
Since its release in 2004, World of Warcraft received five large expansions. The Burning Crusade was released in 2007, Wrath of the Lich King in 2008, Cataclysm in 2010, Mists of Pandaria in 2012 and Warlords of Draenor in 2014. The latter introduced numerous innovations, including the land of Draenor with a new story arc. In addition, the graphic design was improved, and the maximum level of experience was raised to 100.
