Will GTA 6 on PS5 Pro Run at 4K/60? Digital Foundry Expert Provides Comprehensive Answer

The PlayStation 5 Pro might not be sufficient for playing Grand Theft Auto 6 at 60 frames per second in 4K resolution. At least this is the opinion of the Digital Foundry editorial team after the presentation of the Sony console's new version, as IGN reported.

Let's face it: the reveal of the new, "better" version of the PS5 was rather coldly received, mainly due to the lack of a disk drive, which (in the opinion of some players) makes the console more of a successor to the cheaper, digital edition rather than a "real" PlayStation 5. Internet users were also not convinced that the PS5 Pro is worth purchasing due to the lack of significant differences in the presented graphical comparisons.

Of course, the slightly more powerful components are supposed to be an important advantage of the Pro version. The only question is how this will affect the functioning of games in practice, such as GTA 6, one of the most highly anticipated games of the decade.

GTA 6 in 60 fps on PS5 Pro: possible, but unlikely

The Digital Foundry team has no worries about how GTA 6 will perform on the PS5. After all, the first trailer had to be presented on this console and/or Xbox Series X (the PC version hasn't even been confirmed yet). So if the original PS5 can handle Grand Theft Auto VI, it will be no challenge for the PS5 Pro console.

The smoothness of the animation is another matter. It's not really expected that the current versions of the ninth-generation consoles will allow for gameplay at 60 fps, unless in a very well-developed performance mode. Nonetheless, in the context of the vast open world that Rockstar games are famous for, even this seems unlikely. This puts a significant strain on the processor, and the one in the PS5 Pro is the same as in the original console.

That is why Richard Leadbetter, DF's technical editor, is certain that if the developers of GTA6 are targeting 30fps on the base PS5, there's no way the Pro version will handle the game at 60fps. A more powerful GPU setup won't make any difference here, at best the graphics will be slightly improved.

Of course, Rockstar may work wonders and ensure that GTA VI runs at 60 fps on PS5 and XSX - or at least close enough to that value for the PlayStation 5 Pro to have a real chance of maintaining that frame rate. However, this is unlikely: 30 fps was the standard in both GTA 4 and GTA 5 on PS3 and X360 consoles.

Elden Ring in 60 fps?

Leadbetter appears to be somewhat disoriented after the initial presentation of the device, despite his belief in the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Partly, this is because the presentation was too short (9 minutes isn't enough to discuss technical details thoroughly), but also due to the poor selection of games to demonstrate the differences between the regular PS5 and the Pro version.

As Leadbetter indicates, The Last of Us: Part II and Marvel’s Spider-Man are titles that look excellent even on the "basic" console. Such games will benefit the least from PS5 Pro improvements.

Sony should instead opt for games that had some issues or simply appeared worse on the current device. The journalist thinks that the new console could potentially run Elden Ring at 60 frames per second.

Leadbetter doesn't particularly endorse the argument circulating on social media that buying a PC is more cost-effective than a PS5 Pro, at least in terms of games. A PC capable of displaying comparable or better graphics would be much more expensive. According to the editor, a significantly more efficient GeForce RTX 4070 card costs $540, and that's just the beginning of the expenses.
