What Is „You Are Bugs” All About? Phrase from Netflix's 3 Body Problem Explained
A mysterious phrase, „you are bugs,” has begun to appear around the world, linked to Netflix's new series, 3 Body Problem. We explain what it's all about.
The phrase "you are bugs" has started to appear on social media and on screens around the world, which is associated with Netflix's new TV series, 3 Body Problem, and has appeared there to celebrate its release. Many are probably wondering what it means if they haven't yet seen the TV show or haven't yet made it to the right episodes. So, we're rushing to explain.
In 3 Body Problem, humanity faces an extraterrestrial threat that comes to our planet and has no peaceful intentions. The San-Ti are making as much as a 400-year journey through space to conquer Earth and squash the people who inhabit it like insects under their boot.
In episode 4 of the TV series, we learned that the San-Ti don’t understand metaphors. This was shown during a conversation between environmentalist and billionaire Mike Evans, who spoke on the radio with Lord, the voice of the San-Ti. During this conversation, he calls the intelligence agents who want to bring down his San-Ti-supporting organization insects. Lord clearly did not understand the metaphor, as he explains to Evans that his enemies aren’t insects, but humans. The environmentalist then explains to San-Ti that he was using a metaphor and adds, "I was describing them as pests because, well, that's what they are. Annoying, inconsequential, easy to eliminate, like bugs you can squash under your shoe".
The San-Ti definitely remembered this conversation, and even decided to use what Evans taught them. We find out it in episode 5, when they reveal their intentions, which are to conquer Earth and destroy humanity. At the end of the episode, a mysterious message appears on all the screens in the world, reading, "You are bugs".
The same message has begun to appear on screens around the world to promote the Netflix’s TV series. We can see it in Times Square in New York, USA; Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Australia; Westgate Oxford and Oxford Parkway in Oxford, UK; Shibuya Crossing and Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan; Metro Swietokrzyska in Warsaw, Poland; on Sphere in Las Vegas, USA, among others.
