Free Alternative to Civilization 5 Coming Soon to Steam
The free-to-play game Unciv will soon debut on Steam, offering mechanics from Civilization 5 and simple audiovisuals. The game can run even 'on a potato.'.
Unciv - an visually simple open-source free-to-play 4X strategy game and a reimplementation of the mechanics from Sid Meier's Civilization V - will be coming to Steam soon. We don't know when exactly this will happen, but the product card has already appeared on Valve's platform.
It is worth noting that Unciv is not new - the title was released on January 2, 2019 on Android mobile devices. Some time later it also hit PCs (in Windows and Linux - it can be also be installed on Mac OS PCs).
Such high availability is due to the game's extremely modest system requirements - according to the chart on Steam, the recommended configuration should have only 2 GB of RAM.
Unciv is still under development. Its creator, Yair Morgenstern, along with GitHub users who are collaborating with him on the project, are focusing currently on polishing the game and implementing missing mechanics from Civilization V. This stage is reportedly close to completion - while further plans include implementation of solutions brought by theGods & Kings and Brave New World DLCs.
If you are wondering whether Unciv will appeal to you, know that the aforementioned Yair Morgenstern described it as follows:
"It depends on what you're looking for. If you care about high-resolution graphics, amazing soundtrack, animations, etc. - I highly recommend Civilization V from Firaxis Games.
However, if you are simply looking for a small, fast, easily modifiable and complex 4X strategy that will run "on a potato," you are in the right place."
