Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief Return to Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal

Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have officially taken control of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief brands. Until recently, they were managed by Square Enix.

Swedish company Embracer Group is growing rapidly. In addition to creating world's largest video game archive, the corporation is systematically buying various studios. At the end of August, the company announced the acquisition of western teams owned by Square Enix. Among them were Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. They recently shared particularly important information on their official websites. It turns out that the developers have taken control of several brands that were previously owned by Square Enix (via VGC).

We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including TOMB RAIDER and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited," reads the statement on the studio's official website.

The situation is similar for developer Deus Ex and Thief, Eidos Montreal. The Canadian company also did not fail to boast about the acquisition of the mentioned brands.

[...] To put things simply, the big change is that Eidos-Montréal (or its affiliates) is now the owner of the games it developed, like the Deus Ex and Thief games, and the controller of the data obtained from the various gameplay metrics tracked in its titles," reads the note the company's news release.

Finally, it is worth recalling that Crystal Dynamics is developing a brand new installment of Tomb Raider on Unreal Engine 5. Recently, several intriguing details about the project were revealed. However, these were immediately removed at the request of the developers, which seems to confirm their credibility.
