Tom and Jerry are Back; Trailer Meets With Mixed Reception

Warnes Bros. showed the official trailer of the new movie with Tom and Jerry. Not everyone is happy, however, because it will not be a classic animation, known from previous installment of the iconic show.

Warner Bros. announced that it was working on a new feature film telling the adventures of the iconic duo two years ago. Commentators pointed out at the time that Tom and Jerry already had one big cinema movie, namely Tom and Jerry: The Movie from 1992, and that it didn't do too well. Some also reported that the new story would probably be a combination of acting and animation, which, as we know today, has been confirmed.

The trailer of Tom and Jerry movie dispelled at least some of the fears that the filmmakers would place too much emphasis on realism and three-dimensionality of animated characters. Earlier attempts of this kind, such as Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) and Garfield (2004) or the problems with the recent Sonic The Hedgehog (2020) showed how easy it is to get lost on this path.

Warner Bros. must have taken it to heart, because Tom and Jerry will rather try to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), where reality and two-dimensional characters appear together. Another thing to attract viewers to the cinemas are famous names: Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Pena or Rob Delaney. The premiere is planned for 2021, so far without a specific date.

The analysis of comments on Reddit shows that some fans have significant doubts about the form chosen by Warner Bros.

Internet user chefdangerdagger states directly:

"This is some janky looking CGI for sure"

Some, like wldcordeiro, say that the movie looks worse than its inspiration:

"Somehow it looks worse than Who Framed Roger Rabbit while being thirty two years younger."

For others, like isaaclian11 , the new project lacks key elements, such as Tom's famous scream:

"When Jerry slams the door at Tom's fingers, it's such a missed opportunity to not use the classic Tom's scream."

1live4downvotes is worried that the movie might not find its audience:

"This movie is not for me, that is certain. Though the question is...who is it for?"

There's no shortage of jokes about the fact that the movie looks a little outdated. Terrell2 writes:

"Feel like I just got transported to 2007 after watching that trailer. I can't wait to see Hancock next summer."
