RMS Titanic Recreated in Mafia After 15 Years of Fan Work
A group of modders has been working on a mod for the first Mafia, in which we will be able to visit the famous ocean liner RMS Titanic.
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, the first part of the iconic gangster series, found a place in the hearts of thousands of players around the world over a decade ago. Some of them fell in love with the game so much, that even today they create dedicated mods. An example of this is Mafia Titanic Mod, which has been created for almost 15 years. The ambition of the creators is to develop one of the most accurate, detailed and free 3D models of the Titanic in history.
Players will be able to move freely around the ship. The mod will also offer a new storyline, with recorded voice actors, cutscenes and a new soundtrack. The plot is as follows: Thomas Angelo is to deliver an expensive car to Don Salieri's cousin. However, boss Morello finds out about the deal and will do anything to get the car. The mod also takes into account the ship's sinking - player at this time can run around the ship and watch how the luxury ocean liner is gradually swallowed by the sea.
The release of the first part of the mod (out of four) was announced for the second quarter of 2021, but the developers had to delay it. In an interview with Eurogamer, the main creator of the mod, Robin Bongaarts said that some elements still need to be completed, and then the modders will still conduct beta tests. Only then the Mafia enthusiasts will release the first part of their creation. When will the following ones come out? It's hard to say at this point, but Bongaarts believes it will be easier for the modding team to keep up the pace once the first piece of the story is released.
Check out how the mod looks in action:
Bongaarts, who started the whole project, admitted that at first he just wanted to make a simple 3D model of the ship. However, when he discovered new programs and tools to improve the mod, his ambitions grew. Starting out in 2006 he thought the whole process would take about 3 months, but as we know today, he was sorely mistaken. Over the years a lot of people have been involved in the project, and even mechanics that don't appear in the original, namely swimming and ladder climbing, have been added to the mod. Bongaarts points out that without the help of other enthusiasts, the mod would be in a completely different phase of development right now.
The mod should work with the original and Steam versions of the game. The developers are working on making it work with the GOG edition as well. If you are interested in the progress of this ambitious work, be sure to take a look at the official website and Discord channel of the modding group.
