Tim Schafer's Legendary Studio May be Working on Bizarre Game Prototyped in 2017
Tim Schafer and studio Double Fine may be working on another quirky game, which we first saw in action - then still a prototype - in 2017.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that one of the two games currently being developed by Double Fine Productions, a team from Xbox Game Studios known for the wacky yet acclaimed Psychonauts series, is a game whose prototype was revealed back in 2017.
That the development team led by industry visionary, Tim Schafer, is working on new games, we learned from a document released last year, which presented a behind-the-scenes look at work on Psychonauts 2. However, the creation of these as-yet undisclosed items was to be suspended while work on the sequel to Psychonauts was underway - which we also learned about from the aforementioned video.
The latest rumors, as reported by eXputer, indicate that we may have learned about one of the games developed by Double Fine. It is to be a game titled Kiln.
This is supported, among other things, by the fact that on October 2023 a trademark for "Kiln" was registered by Microsoft, which owns Double Fine Productions. It is worth noting at the same time that the very fact of the creation of "new things" in Tim Schafer's team was confirmed today in a a telling "tweet", which promises imminent disclosure.
That's not all, as Kiln is also the title of a prototype game created by Derek Brand, who, as Schafer revealed in this material on Psychonauts 2, is leading one of Double Fine's projects. What's more, Kiln can be found on the official website of the aforementioned development team.
As the game's description reads, Kiln is a "multiplayer, team-based fighting game [...] focusing on creating unique, player-sculpted characters with crazy, physics-based animations and destruction."
It should be noted that the quoted description is from April 2017, and it applies only to the game's prototype. We can therefore assume that the title - if it is indeed in development - has managed to undergo quite a transformation.
On the other hand, this crazy description of the game undoubtedly fits the character of Double Fine. What's more, preserving the title for such a long time for a game project, suggests that at least some of the ideas and concepts from 2017 have survived to this day.
If you are curious about the initial plan for Kiln, below is a video showing the prototype of the game in question in action.
While reports of Double Fine's new game sound quite plausible - especially given the bizarre nature of the studio's previous works - I remind you that we are still moving mainly in the realm of conjecture, not official announcements. For those we must still wait.
