A month ago we heard about layoffs at Naughty Dog. At the time, there were rumors that this could mean the cancellation of the project commonly called The Last of Us: Factions, a multiplayer spin-off of the popular series. However, it turns out that these speculations were wrong.

  1. The source of this information is the best possible - it was provided by Vinit Agarwal, one of the two directors of the game.
  2. The developer boasted about the completion of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and at the same time, to keep people from barraging him with questions, confirmed that he is still working on the online spin-off to The Last of Us.
  3. So everything indicates that reports about the abandonment of the project were untrue.

Cancellation of the project due to layoffs never really made sense. Indeed, the downsizing at Naughty Dog was not large - about 25 people said goodbye to their jobs, most of whom were testers.

It is worth noting that The Last of Us: Factions is just a placeholder title. In fact Sony has not yet confirmed the official name of this project.

Recall that the latest game from the brand is a remake of the first part, in the form of The Last of Us: Part I, which debuted last year on PS5, and seven months ago also hit PC. According to recent rumors alongside the multiplayer spin-off, Naughty Dog is also said to be working on The Last of Us 3. Reportedly, motion capture sessions for the third installment will start later this year, with Ellie again being the main character.
