The Last of Us 3 Will be Made if Naughty Dog Comes Up With Good Story
A recent interview with the director of The Last of Us games may have caught the attention of fans. It shows that the third part of the series may be made, but not forcefully.
Boom for The Last of Us from HBO continues. Two episodes are behind us, and the series has won the affection of viewers around the world. Could the rise in popularity of an already successful brand herald a third installment in the popular game series?
Neil Druckmann, director of the first and second game, answered these questions in a recent interview.
There is a chance for The Last of Us 3, but...
During an interview with Buzzfeed Druckmann was asked, among other things, about the future of the TLoU brand. His answers suggest that the post-apocalyptic world destroyed by the infected humans has a chance to grow.
Naughty Dog has plans to release The Last of Us in the form of a network live-service game (tentatively called The Last of Us: Factions); the first information about this surfaced in October, last year, but until now the studio has been very modest with information about this game.
Fans would certainly like to hear more about a single-player installment that would continue the story from The Last of Us: Part II. However, the question of whether a third part of the series will be made has not been given a firm answer.
"I know there's a bunch of people wondering about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether that will be a thing or not. All I could say is, at Naughty Dog we're very, very privileged that our publisher is Sony [...]
[Sony has supported - ed.] They have supported us every step of the way to follow our passions — meaning that just because something is successful, people think there's all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That's not the case. For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games — and we're able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we're done. We're moving on.
Likewise, with The Last of Us, it's up to us whether we want to continue it or not. Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story."
According to Druckmann, if Naughty Dog's screenwriters don't come up with a good enough story, the strong ending of Part II will be a sufficient culmination of the series.
Certainly, fans would like more. Besides, they're not the only ones waiting longingly for the third part. Back in October 2022, voice actress of Abby mentioned her desire to return to the role of Abby Laura Bailey. Will she have the opportunity to play the character again? Time will tell.
