'New Chapter' in Techland's History - Chinese Tencent Acquires the Company
Tencent has bought a majority stake in Techland. Pawel Marchewka, who remains the studio's CEO, assures that the Chinese giant will enable the company to „kick things into high gear.”.
Today, Pawel Marchewka, founder and CEO of Techland, published on the company's website a letter addressed to players. From it we learned a very important thing - Chinese company Tencent has bought a majority stake in the company responsible for the Dying Light series.
"Today I am happy to announce the partnership with Tencent who are in the process of becoming Techland's majority shareholder.
Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games. We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things.
We will retain full ownership of our IPs, maintain creative freedom, and continue to operate the way we believe is right. I'm also going to continue serving as the studio’s CEO.
Marchewka also took the opportunity to refer to a mysterious game Techland's Warsaw branch has been working on for some time now. According to the company's president, this action RPG "is taking shape and starting to look really special."
The cooperation with Tencent is expected to be beneficial for Techland's new IP, and through this supposedly player expectations will be met. Unfortunately, the topic of this fantasy open-world game (probably the heir to the long abandoned Hellraid). Because of this, we still do not know when its release could take place.
The purchase of Techland by Tencent will certainly affect the Polish company - hopefully positively. The Chinese giant also has shares in companies such as Ubisoft, FromSoftware, Riot Games and Epic Games.
It is worth mentioning that Tencent has already taken an interest in smaller Polish developers. It is an investor in Exit Plan Games, The Parasight, 1C Entertainment and Bloober Team, among others. "Acquisition" of Techland is the most significant recent event in the Polish game market, given that the Wroclaw-based company beat CD Projekt in terms of revenue in 2022.
