System Shock Remake on the first gameplay video
The first gameplay video from System Shock Remake was posted online. The video shows some of the redesigned locations from the original game with new additions that fit the original atmosphere.
Night Dive Studios shared some early results of their work on the remake of the good, old classic System Shock from 1994. The pre-alpha gamplay video posted above shows off some of the original locations that have been redesigned on Unity engine, as well as brief sequences of combat. Note that this is still very early in-development, but it surely is impressive.
In an interview with Polygon, Stephen Kick, the founder of Night Dive Studios, noted that the revamped version of System Shock will not be simply 1 to 1 remake with improved graphics and a new user interface. Some elements will be added that definitely fit System Shock’s atmosphere of isolation, but couldn’t make it into the original game due to technical limitations of the time. An example of that is the large room showed at the end of the video with Saturn visible outside a big window. Kick added:
We've kind of shifted the tone from the original game of a horror adventure to more of a horror experience.”
As a natural evolution of game development process, System Shock Remake will draw some inspirations from Dead Space and BioShock series so that the game did not feel too archaic for younger players.
System Shock Remake is heading for PC and Xbox One, but will not be out before 2017.
