Survey Suggests Gothic Fans are Also Witcher Fans

Wen confirming the continuation of work on Gothic Remake, THQ Nordic has also published the results of a survey accompanying the game's playable theaser. The following article will provide a short summary of the information contained in the survey.

In a nutshell

  • Gothic Remake got green lit by THQ Nordic.
  • The respondents liked the game.
  • Fans liked the music the most.
  • The most controversial were combat and controls.

The continuation of work on Gothic Remake was officially confirmed today by THQ Nordic. You can find the full statement together with a link to the survey results here. The decision was made after analyzing the answers and the publishers really had something to dig through, as they received more than 40,000 completed forms. Almost 95% of respondents considered that work on the game should be continued. THQ Nordic Barcelona is responsible for the title, i.e. the same developers who created the playable teaser.

We will still have to wait for the remake, but now the work will start in full swing.

It is safe to say that nostalgia is strong in the community and most of the interest in the title is driven by people who have played in Gothic around its original's release. Considering that the original Gothic launched in 2001, it is not surprising that most of the respondents were in their 20s. Approximately 39% of the people taking part in the survey declared that they were 22-27 years old, while more than 31% of respondents were between 28 and 35. Of course, as many as 85% said they were big fans of the series, who played all parts of the original trilogy (yes, ArcaniA is not Gothic! Or at least it was not included in this question). The game's demo was completed by 84% of respondents.

Most of the survey participants stated that their favourite part of the series is Gothic II. Given this, and the fact that THQ Nordic does not rule out remake of other parts, the creation of a renewed "G2" will probably depend on the reception of the first remake.

The final look of the remake may be influenced by a question relating to other games played by the respondents - here we see mostly The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls - both series appered in about 90% of the answers. While we probably shouldn't expected Gothic: Wild Skyrim, but certainly the creators did not give this question without a reason and plan to somehow refer to its results. Interestingly, Dragon Age and Dark Souls titles are not popular among the respondents, respectively only 0.3% and 0.6% of people participating in the survey played the. Don't Gothic fans like Dragon Age?

This one speaks for itself.

We already know that the game will hit not only PC, but also PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, the results of the survey clearly show that most Gothic fans are PC users, and the most convenient controls option is the keyboard + mouse combo. It follows that PC may be a priority target for the developers at THQ Barcelona.

Immediately after the release of the playable teaser of Gothic Remake, a discussion started on the developers' departure from the original beginning of the game and some other "creative" role-playing decisions. The survey indicates that the voices of dissatisfaction are not in the majority, however. About 59% of respondents claim that the decisions made by the creators were OK, although they need to be worked on and almost 30% of players consider them very good. Only 12% did not like the changes. This shows that the majority of recipients are able to accept greater or lesser changes, and the supporters of 100% fidelity to the original are in a clear minority.

What does the survey say about gameplay? The aspect was assessed on a school scale from 1 to 5. Despite complaining about the title's roughness, most of the answers were 4. Positive marks dominated both in terms of visual effects, as well as interface and sounds. Slightly more hesitation was introduced by questions relating to combat and controls - here much more often there were lower answers - although 3s and 4s prevailed.

Respondents also pointed out that the animations were a bit stiff, but also in this category extremely bad ratings were marginal, and most of the players considered them simply average.

That subtelness of facial expression!

The least controversial was the evaluation of music, because here 4s and 5s were definitely dominating. There is nothing strange about it, because it was taken straight from the original game, and thus stimulated nostalgic notes in fans. And as I said at the beginning, it was nostalgia that made this remake possible in the first place.

As a conclusion, we can quote the results of the question concerning the overall evaluation of the playable teaser. As many as 74% of respondents believe that the demo deserves a rating of 70-85/100, which seems to be a very good result and seems to indicate that the developers from THQ Nordic Barcelona are on the right path.
