Steam Deck 2 Confirmed; Valve Reveals Future Plans
Tonight, the first emails will be sent to people who have reserved a Steam Deck. As it also turns out, Valve is already drawing up plans for a successor to the portable PC.
The long-awaited day has arrived. Today the first emails will be sent to people who reserved Steam Deck. Valve isn't slowing down and is talking about possible plans, including the successor to the portable PC.
Steam Deck 2
In an interview with Edge Gabe Newell spoke on the plans for the successor to Steam Deck. Some of Valve's decisions are being made due to the popularity of the most expensive version of the device.
"The first step is to let you play the great games that exist today. The second iterations are going to be more about: what are the capabilities that mobile gives us, above and beyond what you would get in a traditional desktop or laptop gaming environment?"," said Gabe Newell
Newell revealed that the most expensive version of Steam Deck - a model with 512GB of NVMe storage, costing $649.99, was by far the most popular.
This may come as a surprise, given that it's Valve's first foray into the portable gaming PC market. The company expected price to be a critical factor in its success, which is also expected to be important for Steam Deck 2. Newell points out that gamers' choice of the most expensive version of the device models shows that they want an even better and more powerful device.

VR on Steam Deck
Steam Deck is incredibly powerful for a portable device. With its performance, the platform can be used with VR applications in the future.
"One of the things [Steam Deck - ed. note] represents is battery-capable, high-performance horsepower that eventually you could use in VR applications as well. You can take the PC and build something that is much more transportable. We're not really there yet, but this is a stepping stone," declares Newell
Newell added that he is looking forward to seeing what other companies will do with the software developed for Steam Deck and how they will help develop the platform or possibly create a competitor for the device.
The portable gaming PC from Valve is collecting very favorable reviews. And it looks like it will take its place in the portable gaming market for a while longer. We can only wait for the first Steam Deck shipments to arrive in gamers' homes soon.
