Starlink - Elon Musk Invites You to Test His Internet
SpaceX company will start beta-tests of the Internet based on the Starlink satellite network this summer. Initially, tests will be limited to certain locations north of the equator. The connection is to have sufficient parameters to play video games.
IN A NUTSHELL:
- In the summer, Starlink beta-tests will begin;
- Initially, they will be carried out in locations north of the equator - including Seattle and Germany - but over time, they are also to be available in other parts of the world.
Decrypt reports that SpaceX will start beta-testing its Starlink system this summer. Tests will initially be conducted at some locations north of the equator (Elon Musk mentions Seattle and Germany in tweets), but should be extended to other locations over time.
Starlink is a network of satellites surrounding the Earth, which will provide access to fast and cheap Internet in almost every corner of the world. The main goal is to improve the quality of connection in less urbanized areas, but SpaceX's offer is to be attractive also for city dwellers - Internet speed is to reach 1 GB/s, with a delay (ping) of 30 ms. These are conditions which should be sufficient even for gaming.
By the end of 2021, thousands of Starlink satellites are to be placed in orbit (over five hundred have been launched so far). It is worth noting that Elon Musk's company is not the only entity working on a similar technology - similar initiatives are being implemented by OneWeb, Amazon, Facebook, Space Norway or Telesat.
