Starfield's Dev Responds to Criticism: 'Don't Fool Yourself Into Thinking You Know Why it is the Way it is'
A Bethesda employee has posted a lengthy post in which he rebukes the community that criticizes game developers. Emil Pagliarulo claims that gamers are lack the knowledge of their development process.
Starfield was heralded as a groundbreaking game in many aspects. Therefore, it's hardly surprising that players were disappointed after the space RPG's release. The criticism the title faced prompted one of Bethesda's developers to say some strong words in the direction of the gaming community.
Emil Pagliarulo, director of design at the American studio, took to defending the developers in a lengthy post on X. And although the title isn't mentioning Starfield even once, it's not hard to guess that it was Bethesda's latest creation and its lukewarm reception that pushed the developer to such a reaction.
The developer began to launch into a kind of attack on people who criticize games despite being unaware of the behind-the-scenes of their creation..
In subsequent posts, the creator eases up a bit and puts himself in the place of gamers who spend their money on video games and expect them to be worth the price. Pagliarulo revealed that on more than one occasion he himself felt like criticizing games, but didn't do so because he knows how they are made and has a lot of respect for other developers.
Pagliarulo revealed that when he was still working as a game reviewer, he often acted like a "sarcastic asshole." His perception of gamedev changed only when he got to know the industry inside out.
The developer continues to defend his fellow developers, saying that game development is nothing more than a series of concessions that have to be made in the process.
In subsequent posts, Pagliarulo again changes the narrative and this time encourages players to criticize and complain. In doing so, the developer stresses to be aware of all the hard process the developers had to go through to create it.
Recall that in the first months of next year Starfield will receive several new features. Among them are expected to be city maps, new modes of travel and official mod support.
