Starfield Will Feature a Punishment System; Go to Jail for Breaking Law
A recent Q&A session with the developers of Starfield gave us answers to some of the questions that have been bothering the gamers. Among other things, we learned that it will be possible to go to jail for breaking the law.
Premiere of Starfield is fast approaching. Devs at Bethesda decided to use the remaining time to answer fans' questions during a Q&A session conducted on Discord. They were provided by Will Shen, lead quest designer, and Emil Pagliarulo, lead game designer.
One of the biggest revelations is that Starfield will have a system of laws and stipulated penalties for breaking them.
Space canning
One of the questions asked during the session was about the prison system - in other words, "Can you go to jail for breaking the law in Starfield?". It turns out that yes, while the punishment options for cosmic offenses will be several:
"Shen: Yes, you can choose to go to jail or pay a fine when arrested (or even resist arrest and try to escape).
Pagliarulo: Yes. In this respect, Settled Systems is more like Skyrim than the Commonwealth from Fallout 4. We are all criminals! There is civilization, there is government and there are laws. In several cases, we explore the themes of crime and punishment in our futuristic universe."
This means that you will be able to play as an outlaw who is on the run from justice, a bit like in RDR 2.
Contraband, houses and progression paths
However, many other topics were also raised during the conversation with the developers.
- Related to the previous topic is the issue of contraband, which will be able to be transported on our ships, but it will have to be done in such a way as not to be detected.
- Some items will have special "contraband" markings, and special modules are to be used to hide them, with which we will be able to equip our ship.
If you prefer the more sedate life of a space settler, nothing will prevent you from buying your own property - yes, in Starfield it will also be possible to purchase houses. The developers revealed that we will also be able to get our house by completing one quest, but we don't know what kind yet.
An interesting point is that we will be able to become a "double agent" in the game.
- Although we will be the ones to choose the path of the faction we will join, the game will not force us to stay with it.
- As an example, the developers gave a mission in which we infiltrate the Crimson Fleet on behalf of the United Colonies, but in the end it will be up to us whether we betray the former or the latter.
20 companions to help
Another important point is that in the game we will be able to recruit companions who will follow and help us.
- It will be possible to recruit a maximum of 20 companions, four of whom will receive "more story and interaction with the player" than others.
- When recruiting them, you will have to pay them (one time, there will be no system of paying regular salaries).
- Each of the companions will have their own perks in a particular field.
These are just some of the topics covered during the Q&A. For example, it was confirmed that time in the game will flow only when we play. If you don't have access to the Discord server where the session was held, here's where you will find all the questions and answers.
