Sony Officially Welcomes Bungie to the PlayStation Family
The months-long process of Sony's acquisition of Bungie has come to an end. As of now, the creators of Destiny 2 are officially part of the PlayStation family.
Sony has completed the acquisition of Bungie. On this occasion, the official Twitter account of the PlayStation brand published a message welcoming the team to the new family.
Sony announced intention to acquire Bungie as early as January this year, but the deal took many months to finalize and only now the studio has become the property of the Japanese company.
Bungie is currently busy developing Destiny 2 and Sony's buyout will not change anything in this regard. The game will remain available on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Also, future DLCs will not be exclusive to PlayStation 5. The team is also expected to maintain organizational and creative independence.
Sony paid $3.6 billion for Bungie, which may seem like a high sum for a deal without exclusivity on Destiny 2, but the Japanese conglomerate made the purchase, among other reasons, because of the experience the team has in live-service game development. The company wants to invest heavily in this category (it has more than 10 games of this type planned), but being successful in this field is not an easy task, so Bungie's help will prove invaluable.
Interestingly, 1/3 of the aforementioned 3.6 billion will be distributed among the studio's employees in order to encourage them to stay at Bungie.
