Fans of the cult classic anime Samurai Pizza Cats, have reason to celebrate. Today, the 1990 anime was revived, in a way, in the form of Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past!, a new video game in development at Dutch studio Blast Zero. The upcoming game was announced in a trailer posted to the studio’s YouTube channel. The game does not have a release date yet, but it is available to wishlist on Steam and promised to come to all major platforms.

Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past! is in development and plans to come to all platforms

The opening moments of the trailer are reminiscent of the original anime’s animation style and feature the main villains of the show, also known as the Big Cheese. In a fourth-wall-shattering moment they come up with a plan to bribe the animators to make themselves the main characters of the video game and emperor of Little Tokyo. But the Samurai Pizza Cats will undoubtedly save the day. This 2D action-platformer brings back all the original voice actors (both English and Japanese) from the 1990 anime series. As the narrator says at the end of the trailer, “we’re going to party like it’s 1991.”

The trailer also shows a minute or so of gameplay, showcasing the beat-em-up action and platforming challenges. Players will be able to swap between the three Pizza Cats, Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, and Guido Anchovy, at any time. Based on the gameplay shown the cats will have a home base full of buildings and NPCs that features more of a top-down camera angle. But the main gameplay will be 2D side-scrolling puzzles and action. There was one moment that seemed to suggest random encounters, as the player navigated an overworld, the screen flashed, and they appeared in a 2D environment populated by enemies. But of course, this is speculation, and we will have to wait for more information about the game to learn more.

This announcement comes during the month of the series 35th anniversary. Originally, the series only lasted for one season, running from February 1990 to February 1991. The original Japanese version of the show was not meant to be as comedic as the English version, which was a decision made during the translation of the series. This video game, at least the English version, appears to take after that more comedic interpretation. This was before my time, but I still look forward to learning more about the Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past!
