Possible RoboCop Show Without RoboCop
Ed Neumeier, the screenwriter of the original RoboCop from 1987, announced that work on a prequel TV show is underway. It will focus on the main antagonist of the movies, Dick Jones.
As fans of the original RoboCop still wait for any information about the sequel - RoboCop Returns - a new project looms on the horizon. A TV prequel of the movies is to be created, but it will not talk about the iconic cyborg cop. The production is to show us the fate of the main antagonist - Dick Jones - and to outline the story of the formation of Omni Consumer Products corporation.
Ed Neumeier, in an interview with Moviehole, revealed that he is working on RoboCop's TV prequel under the wings of the Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer studio together with two scriptwriters - Dave Parkin and Rob Gibbs. Additionally, he said that:
"There’s the idea of doing things about business and law enforcement in the city of Detroit a minute-and-a-half in the future, it would be a way to do all sorts of stories about business and tech, Silicon Valley, corporations, snakes in suits, cops, all that. It’s a wonderful rich tapestry. we’ve been talking about it and I think we have an interesting story. It’s fun to work with a younger version of the Dick Jones we meet in RoboCop. He’s an actualised corporate predator [in the move] but nobody necessarily starts out being the bad guy."
It is worth mentioning that there is no formal approval for the show yet, but Neumeier hopes that MGM will find suitable partners to give the pilot a chance.
