Robert Downey Jr. Wants Sherlock Holmes to Have His Own Universe

Robert Downey Jr. and his wife would like to create another movie universe from works focusing on Sherlock. It would also have connections with the TV show Perry Mason.

One of the most popular roles of Robert Downey Jr. is that of Sherlock Holmes in two characteristic action movies directed by Guy Ritchie. We have been waiting for the third chapter of this story for almost 10 years. This year, the actor, along with his wife Susan, produced a crime series for HBO called Perry Mason. It turns out that it has to do with the star's earlier work.

Downey Jr. plans to create a new movie universe based on Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories. It would include the aforementioned productions. He told a little more about this idea during a conversation with Fast Company representatives:

“At this point, we really feel that there is not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena, I think, to this day. So to me, why do a third movie if you’re not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity and other times and elements?”

His partner, Susan Downey, also added a few words:

“We think there’s an opportunity to build it out more. Spin-off characters from a third movie, to see what’s going on in the television landscape, to see what Warner Media is starting to build out, things with HBO and HBO Max.”

This is an ambitious plan, to say the least, but very much welcomed by avid fans of Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes. We do not know yet the exact plans to develop the universe, although we learned a little bit about the third mopvie - it is to debut on December 22, 2021. In addition, the TV series Perry Mason will return with second season in a more uncertain future.
